Jamahl Davis is Featured on the Best of 2011 - ScoutsFocus Fall Showcase Highlight Tape!

Jamahl Davis, a 5'9 155lb 2012 PG of Riverwood High School (GA), turned in one of the day’s best efforts. The lead guard has very good handles and excellent court vision. We love this kid, ...he also has a pretty nice stroke he can hit on occasion.

Also, the following individuals brought their share of excitement to the hardwood. Little difference in talents or abilities actually exist compared to the names singled out above. Generally, each of these campers demonstrated quickness, aggressiveness, and end-to-end court awareness and coverage. Any of them, easily, could become significant complements to teams in their future:

Senior Night! Riverwood High School vs. North Springs 2//7/2012

Tuesday, February 7, 2012 v North Springs
Regular Season Ends with Loss to North Springs 76-59
Senior Night Recap Included
The tremendous energy from the packed student section and the excitement of Senior Night was not enough to propel the Raiders to victory over cross-town rival North Springs. On a night honoring the Seniors, the crowd was electric, raucous and at times, deafening. Throughout the game, Seniors Jamahl Davis (12 pts.), Eric Vaz (3 pts.), Adam Birnbrey (2 pts.), Barak Hayut (14 pts.), and reserve guard Anthony Johnson (1 pt.) played with tremendous heart, energy and determination – never wilting, but simply running out of time. Davis and Hayut provided the initial offensive surge, while Vaz and Birnbrey were the grit and determination – doing, as they have all year, whatever was necessary to win. When Davis left in the second half with an injury to his ankle, Johnson stepped in and ran the show. North Springs’ combination of size, speed, and relentless offense was too much for an erratic Raider offense to defeat.

Before the capacity crowd, the game began at break-neck speed. After the Spartans scored off the opening tip, Hayut was all net from beyond the three point arc. Junior Connor McDaniel hit two free throws, and after another Hayut bomb found its mark, Davis drove the lane; Riverwood grabbed the early lead, 12–8. North Springs quickly tied the game, but Vaz found a cutting McDaniel with a spectacular pass to recapture the lead. The lead see-sawed, but with the score tied at 16, the Raiders suddenly could not score. During this cold spell, the Spartans were poised to blow the game open. However, with North Springs up 23-16 and driving for another bucket, McDaniel drew an offensive foul, and on the change in possession, sophomore Royce Jones struck from three. McDaniel then blocked a Spartan shot. Riverwood was in the game 25–19 at the end of the first quarter.

The Raider defense tightened to start the second quarter; and Davis found his stroke – hitting from the line, beyond the arc and on penetrating drives. Junior Jonathan Goodson scored off a McDaniel pick, and the Raiders pulled within one, 27–26. When North Springs found the range from the outside, and again, Riverwood’s offense went missing, the lead ballooned to 40–28. Riverwood finished off the half on a small run to close the lead to 42–33.

Although a strong start was needed by the Raiders in the second half, it was North Springs that took command. Riverwood moved the ball and took good shots, but did not score until half-way though the period; the Spartans were up 50–33. The Raiders did not quit. Through the remainder of the quarter, Riverwood nibbled away at the lead as the Spartans could not convert from the free throw line and the Raiders converted a number of steals and turnovers into easy baskets. Juniors McDaniel, Goodson and Amari Carter fueled the effort to come within striking distance, down only 61–47 with the final eight minutes remaining.

With North Springs vulnerable to a charge, the Seniors asserted their leadership. Johnson, playing for the injured Davis, began the quarter driving to the basket; he then stole the ball and fed McDaniel for an easy two. With Birnbrey grabbing rebounds, and Hayut hitting from the outside, the Raiders kept pace, but could not close the gap below 13 points. As the Spartans slowed the pace, and began taking time off the clock, Riverwood was forced to foul. North Springs converted from the line. Riverwood continued to keep pace, and would not fade. Vaz hit two clutch free throws and McDaniel drove the lane to keep the lead at 13, 69–56. Then, Riverwood made their charge. After forcing a turnover, Birnbrey converted two free throws; the lead was reduced to 11 for the first time in the half, 69–58. On the ensuing in-bounds, with the Raiders providing full court pressure, the ball was stolen at mid-court. With a chance to drop the deficit below ten, with just over two minutes to play, Riverwood had a three point attempt rim out. The Spartans gained possession and their poise, and closed out the game. With 1:52 remaining the Seniors were taken out to a standing ovation -- obviously disappointed in the outcome of their final game at home.

As the team readies itself for the second season: post-season tournament play where everyone is 0–0 and anything can happen, we pay tribute to the Seniors. The Raiders entered the season with significant questions, having to replace last season’s top seven players. Who would provide the offense? Who would be the leader? How would this team stop others and rebound? The Seniors - collectively - provided the answers. They led by demonstrating the value of team work and chemistry. They supported each other, each playing his role, and never was there a game where they were out-worked – perhaps out-played - but never out-worked. Most importantly, they allowed the younger players to grow and succeed – because they knew the old cliché – the whole was greater than an individual part, was essential to a successful season.

No. 1, Anthony Johnson was a lightning quick reserve, always ready and willing to provide Davis and Sophomore point guard Trey Houston with needed rest. When Johnson entered the game, he provided instant energy that was infectious on both ends of the floor. Johnson could penetrate just about any defensive scheme and through the course of the year developed an effective outside jump shot. Defensively, his quick hands wrecked havoc and disrupted opponents’ offenses – often leading to easy transition points.

No. 2, Jamahl Davis was the catalyst for the offense; a tremendous scorer, Davis learned to involve all others in the offense and not just look for his own shot. When defenses provided an opening he took advantage; when he was the focus of the defense's eye, he distributed the ball to others. Defensively, Davis was quick and opportunistic, forcing turnovers, jump starting the break, and often converting fast break points. As went Davis, so went the Raider offense.

Jamahl Davis scores 29 points against North Atlanta High School!

Friday, January 27, 2012
Raiders Blow Out North Atlanta, 68-39
The Raiders traveled down the road to face in-town rival North Atlanta and ended a tough six-game skid with a sweep of the two-game home/away series with the Warriors. Taking command from the opening tip, Riverwood was never threatened during the contest. Benefitting from contributions from every member of the team, including Freshman call-up Jordan Renfro, the Raiders improved their region record to 4-7/10-13 overall. The Senior backcourt trio of Jamahl Davis, Eric Vaz and Barak Hayut began the assault by scoring the first 15 points of the game and staking the Raiders to a commanding 19-4 lead at the quarter. As the second quarter began, both teams played helter skelter, and, but for the fact North Atlanta could not hit from the free throw line, the game might have become close. After Junior swingman Amari Carter provided an offensive spark when he hit a jumper from 15 feet, Senior point guard Anthony Johnson served as the catalyst for efficient ball movement and reignited the offense to end the half. Riverwood went into the locker room with a commanding 32-15 lead.

As has been the Achilles heel all season, Riverwood left their game in the locker room to start the second half. After the Warriors knocked down a three-point shot and scored on a fast break layup following a Raider turn-over, the lead was quickly down to 12. Coach Jenkins immediately called time-out. The Raiders responded out of the time-out -- Vaz drove the lane and Junior forward Connor McDaniel scored on a terrific feed from Vaz. Riverwood was once again off and running. With the defense causing turnovers, and Davis scoring on fast break lay-ups, the Raiders quickly stretched the lead to 40-25. This time, they never looked back and did not allow the Warriors back in the contest. Resurgent Senior postman Adam Birnbrey added to the onslaught, finding the range inside. Combined with Davis’ relentless attack to the hole, Riverwood built a commanding 47-29 lead by the end of the third.

Playing the bench through much of the fourth quarter, Riverwood continued to extend the lead behind the guard play of Sophomore Trey Houston, who directed the offense and chipped in seven points, and the inside play of Juniors Jonathan Goodson (8 points) and Amari Carter (4 points). The Raiders maintained the intensity to the final horn and cruised to victory, 68–39. Riding the outstanding play of Davis – leading with a team high 29 points -- Riverwood enjoyed a comfortable, yet dominating win. Hopefully this win will propel the Raiders through the final three regular games: away against St. Pius X (1/31); and home versus Washington (2/3) and North Springs (2/7), and the Region Tournament.

Raider Scoring: Senior Jamahl Davis (29); Junior Jonathan Goodson (8); Sophomore Trey Houston (7); Senior Adam Birnbrey (6); Senior Eric Vaz (5); Junior Amari Carter (4); Junior Connor McDaniel (3); Senior Barak Hayut (3); Sophomore Royce Jones (2); and Sophomore Adam Hornstra (1)

Raiders Outgunned by Spartans 75-67
In an offensive shootout – that also had solid defense - the Raiders fell to the North Springs Spartans 75–67 on the road. In his first game in a Raider uniform, Junior post-man Jonathan Goodson was a force on both ends of the floor and lead the scoring with 24 points. Unfortunately, his contributions were not enough as the Spartans jumped out to an 11 point first quarter lead, and then played the Raiders even for the next three quarters. The Raiders fought hard throughout all four quarters, and often closed the gap to six points. But, every time it seemed Riverwood was poised to catch the Spartans, North Springs had an answer – whether an easy score in transition, a long range bomb, or a tough put-back on the offensive boards.

After a sluggish start, Riverwood picked up the intensity on defense and began finding the open man on offense, which turned out in many instances to be Goodson. The Raiders began to slowly fight back into the game when they settled down with a three guard offense: Seniors Jamahl Davis and Anthony Johnson and Sophomore Trey Houston. Coupled with Goodson and a rotation of Senior Barak Hayut and Sophomore Royce Jones, the offense found a rhythm. This line-up matched North Spring’s quickness and tough man-to-man defense. Riverwood pulled within six (34–28) with 2:55 left in the first half. North Springs, however, would not let the Raiders close the gap any further, as both teams continued to trade baskets. The teams headed into the half with the Spartans in the lead 42–38.

Although the defense tightened up in the second half behind the inside presence of Senior Adam Birnbrey and the tough man defense provided by Senior Eric Vaz, North Springs worked the lead back to ten points (57–47). Gutsy offensive shooting by Jones and constant drives to the basket by Davis prevented the Spartans from running away with the game. Hayut hit two big shots from beyond the arc, Goodson added a third, and the Raiders were back within six with 4:52 remaining to play. Goodson hit a free throw, and Riverwood appeared ready for a final run at the lead, but North Springs simply would not wilt. The Raiders, however, would not fade, and continued to battle: Houston and Goodson nailed clutch threes, but North Springs always answered. And the clock finally ran out with the Spartans taking the match 75–67. The Raider lineup looks forward to the return of Junior Connor McDaniel, who missed Friday's action due to a tonsil infection. Raider scoring leaders: Junior Jonathan Goodson – 24; Senior Jamahl Davis - 20; and Senior Barak Hayut - 8.

Male Athlete of the Week - Jamahl Davis

Riverwood

By David Rutz
drutz@neighbornewspapers.com

Senior point guard Jamahl Davis waited in the wings to take a position of leadership with the Riverwood boys’ basketball team.

In his final season with the Raiders, he’s running with the chance to be their captain, floor general and top scorer as Riverwood tries to return to the Class AAA state playoffs for the first time since 2010, when it advanced to the quarterfinals.

“He’s kind of waited for the opportunity to take control of the team,” said Riverwood coach Buck Jenkins. “Last year, Mitch Alterman was the captain and he led the team. This year was Jamahl’s year, and he stepped up.”

Davis scored 22 points in the Shane’s Rib Shack Classic championship game, a 57-53 overtime victory over Newnan Dec. 29, giving the Raiders three wins in three days and a shot of momentum with the bulk of their Region 5-AAA schedule on slate.

He’s averaging a team-best 15.4 points, making him the only player on the balanced offense in double figures. He also leads Riverwood with 4.4 assists per contest.

“He’s running the show,” Jenkins said. “It’s not just his scoring that’s been impressive. He’s running the team, and he’s getting other guys involved. He’s really grown into that leadership role.”
